ATM/Debit Card Security Frequently Asked Questions
- What does it mean when you say my card may have been compromised?
-
ATM/Debit card compromises occur when unauthorized individuals gain access to your ATM/Debit card information. Typically the information accessed is your card number, expiration date and PIN. This information can be collected either manually or electronically. The information gathered is then used to create a counterfeit ATM/Debit card that can be used or sold.
- Does this mean I have fraud on my account?
-
No. It means that your ATM/Debit card information may have been gathered by unauthorized individuals. Your ATM/Debit card is replaced as a preventative measure.
- Why is my card being replaced if there hasn’t been any suspicious activity on my account due to a data breach?
-
Bath Savings takes every compromise seriously. In each case we evaluate the need to reissue a new ATM/Debit card and take appropriate action. Many times we issue new cards for our customers during breaches in order to prevent potential fraudulent use of your card information. Our goal is to be safe and proactive.
- How do you know my card was affected?
-
We receive notices of potential compromises from many sources and tools that we use to monitor activity. If we discover activity that appears suspicious on your account we will communicate directly with you by telephone or letter.
- What steps do I need to take if I have preauthorized debits on my compromised card?
-
You should contact the merchant(s) once you have replaced your card, and provide them with the new card number and expiration date.
- I have other signers on my bank accounts. Will this affect their cards as well?
-
Even though you share the account, each of you has your own ATM/Debit card with a unique number. Therefore, unless they received notification from us, their card has not been affected by the data breach.
